How to protect yourself from the sun?

When we properly expose ourselves to the sun, it can be a true ally. The list of benefits is too long to count: it’s a mood booster, it’s a shot of vitamin D, it strengthens our immune system and builds strong bones, it encourages healthy sleeping habits…

But, beware: it can also cause sunburns and sunstroke, and can lead to premature aging of the skin and an increased risk of skin cancer.

To make the most of the sunshine safely, adopt some simple, essential steps into your daily routine!

Choose the right sun protection

  • Choose a sun cream that protects against UVA and UVB rays, with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 or even 50, depending on your skin type and the conditions in which you are exposed to the sun.
  • Apply the cream generously 30 minutes before exposure and reapply regularly, particularly after swimming or during excessive sweating.

Wear protective clothing

  • Choose light but protective clothing, made of anti-UV fabrics if possible.
  • Cover your head with a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face, ears and neck.
  • Wear sunglasses with UV protection, which are essential to avoid eye injuries.

Avoid the hottest hours

  • The sun’s rays are most intense between 12 and 5 p.m. During this time, spend time in the shade whenever you can and limit your outdoor activities.

Hydrate regularly

  • Sun exposure encourages dehydration. To avoid the risk of heat stroke, drink water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.

Be attentive to children and frail people

  • Children, elderly people and those with a history of skin disease are more sensitive to the sun. For them, shade and protective clothing are preferable to sun cream, and staying hydrated with water is essential.

Beware of false friends

  • Less sunny days do not prevent UV rays from penetrating the cloud layer.
  • Water, sand and snow reflect the sun’s rays, increasing their intensity.

Remember to protect yourself!   By following this advice, you can reduce the risks of sun exposure and protect your skin in the long term, while enjoying the sun with complete peace of mind!
